正在法國訪問的達賴喇嘛今天稍早會晤4了法國第一夫人卡拉布妮，他並敦促5中國「向民主之途前進」。達賴喇嘛的發言人6說，這位七十三歲的西藏精神領袖將於八月三十一日帶領7全球各地的信徒8，展開「象徵性9的十二小時絕食」。
西藏流亡政府總理顙東仁波切說，絕食行動的目的是為了喚起對西藏的關切10。
